How It Works

Three steps to elemental chess mastery

1
Selecting elements for chess pieces and making a move on the board

Pick Your Elements

Before each game, assign elements from your collection to your chess pieces. Fire, Water, Plant, Air, and over 100 discovered elements are available. Your element loadout is part of your strategy — different elements produce different reactions when they clash on the board.

Capture and React

When you capture a piece, the two elements combine — just like crafting. Fire plus Water makes Steam. Lightning plus Metal makes Electromagnet. An AI determines who had the semantic advantage and generates a unique board reaction: damage, shields, poison, transformation, and more.

3
A victorious trade reaction pushing enemy pieces away

Win the Trade

If your element beats theirs, the reaction hits your opponent's pieces. If it doesn't, it hits yours. Every capture becomes a tactical decision: is the chess position worth a bad elemental trade? Sometimes sacrificing a piece wins the board through a powerful reaction.

Discover Elements

An ever-growing tree of elements built by the community

Anything Chess board with various elemental pieces

Start with four, discover hundreds

Every player begins with the four base elements: Fire, Water, Plant, and Air. Each capture creates a new element from the two that clashed. Fire plus Water makes Steam. Stone plus Fire makes Magma. Lightning plus Water makes Storm. The combinations follow intuitive real-world logic.

Discoveries are permanent and shared across all players. When you find a new combination, your name is recorded as the discoverer for everyone to see. The element tree grows as the community experiments with new matchups.

Before each game, open the board configuration screen to assign your discovered elements to your chess pieces. Build a loadout that matches your playstyle — aggressive fire-based elements, defensive shields, or tricky status effects.

Game Modes

Play your way

🏠

Local

Two players on one device. Share a screen and settle who has the better elemental loadout. Perfect for playing with a friend sitting next to you.

🤖

vs AI

Play against a computer opponent with three difficulty levels. The AI plays standard chess while you experiment with element strategies and discover new combinations.

🌐

Online

Create a room and get a 4-character code. Share it with a friend to start playing together. Full reconnection support — if someone disconnects, they can rejoin within 5 minutes.

Board Effects

Every reaction reshapes the board in a different way

💥

Push

Shoves pieces outward from the capture point. Pushed pieces can collide with the board edge or block other pieces.

💫

Stun

Freezes a piece in place for several turns. Stunned pieces cannot move or capture until the effect wears off.

☠️

Poison

A ticking countdown appears on the piece. When it hits zero, the piece is destroyed. Race to cleanse it or sacrifice it strategically.

Transform

Temporarily changes a piece into a different type. A pawn might become a queen — or your queen might become a pawn.

🛡️

Invulnerable

Protected pieces cannot take damage or be affected by negative effects. A powerful but temporary defense.

🔀

Convert

Turns an enemy piece to fight for your side. One of the most powerful effects — but kings can never be converted.

❄️

Ice Tiles

Pieces that step onto frozen tiles slide across instead of stopping. Plan your movement carefully around icy terrain.

🔥

Burning Tiles

Tiles that damage any piece standing on them each turn. Control the board by creating dangerous zones your opponent must avoid.

🔴

Void

Dark tiles that pull neighboring pieces inward each turn. A gravitational hazard that disrupts formations and forces repositioning.

🟢

Haven

Safe zones that protect any piece standing on them from debuffs. Strategic positioning on haven tiles can turn the tide of a game.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know

Is Anything Chess free to play?
Yes, completely free in any modern browser. No download or installation required. Optional supporter tiers are available to remove banner ads and support development, but all gameplay features are free.
How are elemental reactions generated?
Each reaction is generated in real time by Google Gemini AI. The AI sees the two elements involved, the current board state, and who won the trade, then writes a unique effect using Lua scripting. No two reactions are exactly alike — the AI adapts to the context of each capture.
Can I play on my phone?
Yes. Anything Chess runs in any mobile browser with full touch support. The interface adapts to your screen size. For the best experience, play in landscape mode on smaller screens.
How does the element tree work?
You start with four base elements: Fire, Water, Plant, and Air. Every capture that produces a new combination adds it to a shared, permanent element tree. Over 100 elements have been discovered so far by the community. You can browse the full tree from the board configuration screen.
How does online multiplayer work?
One player creates a room and gets a 4-character code (like "ABCD"). Share that code with a friend — they enter it to join your game. If someone disconnects, they can rejoin with the same code within 5 minutes and the game resumes exactly where it left off.
What data do you collect?
Minimal data. Anonymous players are identified by a one-way hash of their IP address — your actual IP is never stored. If you sign in with Discord or Google, only your user ID and display name are used. No email harvesting, no tracking cookies. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Does the AI opponent cheat?
No. The AI plays standard chess moves using a traditional chess engine. Elements and reactions are completely independent of the AI's move selection. The AI doesn't get better elements or more favorable reactions — it follows the same rules you do.
Can I use an adblocker?
Yes. The game works perfectly fine with adblockers enabled. Ads are optional, non-intrusive, and never interrupt gameplay. If you want to support development, you can disable your adblocker or consider a supporter tier.
